Grant to assist field development
Derby Mayor Marc J. Garofalo, State Senator Joseph Crisco (D-Derby), State Representative Themis Klarides (R-Derby) and State Representative Vincent Tonucci (D-Derby) are proud to announce a $50,000 Grant to assist in the costs associated with the construction of athletic fields at Witek Park. Through the special efforts of State Senator Joseph Crisco, the City of Derby has received this grant. This $50,000 grant is in addition to the $150,000 that is being pursued, diligently, by State Representative Tonucci and State Representative Klarides. Two multi-purpose fields with an associated parking area for approximately 80 cars sited adjacent to the fields will be constructed intended to be used to accommodate soccer games in Derby. Soccer is a popular and rapidly growing sport in Derby, with an enrollment of more than 330 children that make up 16 teams. "Parks and recreation facilities have long been an invaluable resource for urban communities," Garofalo said. "The construction of these fields with emphasis on the harmonious natural setting of the Witek Park will provide a clean, safe recreational environment for hundreds of families and children in Derby."The health and well-being of all of the children in Derby has always been one of my administrations priorities." Senator Crisco said that the $50,000 will "certainly help in the construction of the fields"." Athletics was a very big part of my life up through my years in college - it leads to camaraderie and teamwork, it builds character, and it allows children to enrich their minds and bodies. I am a firm believer of these principles and it was my pleasure to secure this state funding. " Sen. Crisco said. State Representative Klarides said "We’re very happy we could help the kids with a need. More and more children are participating in soccer programs and they need adequate facilities to play." State Representative Tonucci said "This is a great day for the children of our community. We worked hard in a bi-partisan effort to secure this funding and the end result is a better quality of life for our constituents. I am delighted that we were able to help." |
