Shelton's Fire Department provides protection
from fire and the enforcement of all laws
pertaining to fire prevention and safety. Manned
by 225 volunteers, the department is made
up of four companies operating from four
stations located throughout the community:
Currently, the fire department includes 38 pieces
of equipment. All vehicles are
radio equipped
as part of the mutual assistance program
covering Shelton and surrounding cities.
The Chairman of the Board of Fire
Commissioners is appointed by the Mayor.
The Board of Fire Commissioners, the Fire
Chief and his assistants supervise the purchase
of equipment and estimate the department's
expenses for the coming year. The Fire
Marshall and his deputies investigate suspicious
fires, prepare fire reports and issue blasting
and burning permits.
Except for the Fire Marshall,
all of Shelton's firefighters
are volunteers and at least 18
years old. 56% have earned a
national certification of at least
Firefighter 1 - the same held
by professional firefighters.
Some companies maintain a
fire brigade, composed of 16
to 18 year-olds, that train as
future volunteers.
The department is also actively involved in
education and fire prevention. Fire prevention
is highlighted annually during Fire Prevention
Week when firemen visit schools and talk
about fire safety. Once a year the Fire
Marshall and his deputies also provide a
complete fire safety inspection of all schools,
factories and retail stores in the City.
