The Shelton - Derby Skate Park is now open for the season. The City of Derby and the City of Shelton opened the jointly operated skateboard park in October, 2004 for a special free of charge  "preview" season and now maintains an April to October schedule. The park is jointly operated by the recreation departments of both towns. Check at the park for hours of operation and fees.

In 2003, the Derby Board of Aldermen passed a resolution asking the Parks and Recreation Commission to report back to them with a recommendation for a site and rules for use of the facility. The Commission recommended two sites within the City, but also the exploration of possibly jointly developing a park with Shelton. The Shelton Parks & Recreation Commission had already been making plans to build their own park. In March, 2004, the two Parks & Recreation Commissions agreed in principal to the concept and passed their recommendations on to their respective Boards of Aldermen who have since adopted the recommendations.

By working together, the towns have save approximately $30,000 each while providing skaters in both towns with a safe, centrally-located facility.
