Derby's Winningest & Losingest

Derby has one of the proudest high school football traditions in the state of Connecticut ranking in the top five in the total number of games won. In looking at the Connecticut High School Football Record Book, Derby's win against Seymour made Derby only the fifth school in Connecticut history to win 500 games! For this quiz, we thought that we would test your knowledge of the winningest and losingest teams in Derby High history. The quiz asked for for the years that Derby High teams posted their most wins - and the year in which they posted the most losses without a win or a tie. It proved to be a very difficult task - especially in naming the losingest!

For the record, the winningest team in Derby High history was the 1990 team which went 11-0 and captured the mythical state championship as well. The 1969, 1972 and 1973 teams had 10-0 seasons and the 1969 and 1972 teams were also state champs, but there was no playoff system back then, and they completed their seasons with their tenth games. Derby also posted undefeated, untied teams in 1968 (9-0) and 1913 (5-0). Undefeated, but tied seasons took place in 1975 (9-0-2), 1937 (6-0-2), 1932 (6-0-3) and 1905 (6-0-1).

The losingest team was the 1941 team which went 0-8. Other teams that failed to at least tie a game were the first two Derby High teams, 1902 (0-3) and 1904 (0-2). Other frustrating seasons took place in 1916 (0-4), 1922 (0-5), and 1943 (0-7). The 1951 team lost eight, but tied one (0-8-1).

Correct answers were received from: The only people who were able to name both the winningest and losingest teams were Tony Cannici and Nick from Terryville. Michael Regan had the right year for the wins and knew that the worst record was 0-8, but didn't have the year.
