William Red" Clycnh Honored

The sky was a bit grey and shed a few tears while the City of Derby honored one of its own on Saturday, August 2 by rededicating the softball field in the Ryan Athletic Complex as the William "Red" Clynch Memorial Softball field. Clynch was a lifelong Derby resident who left a big imprint on his home town prior to his death in 2014.

"Red" was known for his many contributions to the sporting life in Derby in his various roles as coach, recreation director and member of various boards and commissions. At the time of his death, he was still an active member of the Parks & Recreation Commission. The Commission thought it was fitting to honor his distinguished career by naming the field in his honor and the Board of Aldermen concurred.

Mayor Anita Dugatto presided at an informal and emotional dedication highlighted by brief remarks by city officials, former players that he coached and family members. The stories were marked by the deep respect that all had for a man who gave so much back to his city and highlighted Red's strong attachment to his city, his family, his church, his Irish heritage and his love for Notre Dame.
