Ed Strang Community Day - This Sunday

DERBY - In honor of the 15th anniversary of  stage and screen star Brian Dennehy's  visit to Derby to honor his former Cubmaster, the late Edmund D. Strang, Boy Scout Troop 3 has arranged to offer a limited number of tickets to Dennehy's November 15, 8PM performance of Hughie, by Eugene O'Neill at The Long Wharf Theater in New Haven.  One of the last works O'Neill ever wrote, Hughie premiered at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival, and is directed by Tony Award winner Robert Falls. Dennehy has met with Derby groups after past performances and it is hoped he will do so again following Hughie.

The premium seating tickets, which do not include transportation to Long Wharf Theater, are being offered at a reduced rate of $50 each and will be available for sale beginning at noon on September 28 at Ed Strang Community Day on the Derby Green. The event has been held annually since Dennehy's visit in 1994, as a way to showcase the adventures of Scouting to the community.

The event features food, music and  hands-on outdoor skills stations  such as dutch oven cooking, model campsite, monkey bridge, obstacle course and first aid. In addition, the Derby Fire Department will participate with a fire truck and renown raptor expert Jonathon Woods, who will present his birds of prey, including a bald eagle.

The event is free to the public and free Scouting registration will be offered to youths who join Cub Scout Pack 3, Boy Scout Troop 3 or Venture Crew 33.

Ed Strang Day is being sponsored by Ducibella Venter and Santore, Derby 2nd Congregational Church and Derby Elks Lodge 571. For more information contact Scoutmaster Randy Ritter at 732-0343.
